Matcha calculators

Four things worth working out rather than guessing: how much powder and water to use, how much caffeine that gives you, how long to let the kettle cool, and what you're actually paying per gram. All of them run in the browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

The numbers, if you just want them

Standard doses for every preparation. The calculators exist to scale these and to translate between grams, scoops and teaspoons.

Standard matcha doses by preparation
DrinkMatchaLiquidWater tempScoops
Usucha2 g60 ml water75°C2
Koicha4 g30 ml water70°C4
Hot latte3 g60 ml water + 180 ml milk78°C3
Iced latte3 g60 ml water + 150 ml milk + ice78°C3

Scoops are chashaku scoops at roughly 1g each. A level teaspoon holds about 1.7g and a heaped one up to 2.5g, which is why teaspoon measurements vary so much.

Frequently asked

How much matcha should I use per cup?

2 grams for a bowl of usucha with 60ml of water, 3 grams for a 240ml latte, and 4 grams for koicha with about 30ml of water. The latte dose is higher because milk masks the tea. In traditional terms, a chashaku scoop holds roughly 1 gram.

What temperature should water be for matcha?

70 to 80°C. Use 70°C for koicha, around 75°C for usucha with good ceremonial grade, and up to 80°C for latte or culinary grade. Boiling water extracts catechins aggressively and degrades L-theanine, which produces bitterness that whisking cannot fix.

How much caffeine is in matcha?

Roughly 30mg per gram, so a standard 2g bowl contains about 60mg — a little under a cup of drip coffee at around 95mg. Matcha also contains L-theanine, which moderates how the caffeine is felt, so the same dose tends to feel steadier than coffee.

How much should matcha cost per gram?

Under $0.20 per gram signals bulk culinary quality. $0.35 to $0.60 is premium culinary or latte grade and the value sweet spot for most people. Above $1.20 is ceremonial pricing, which is worth paying if you drink matcha with water alone and largely wasted in a latte.
