Matcha Lemonade

Matcha lemonade is the drink that converts matcha skeptics. Lemon's acidity mutes the vegetal note people don't love, and the cold makes the L-theanine sweetness pop. Strong on a hot day, sneaky-caffeinated, and impossible to mess up.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 60 ml warm water (~75 °C)
  • 60 ml fresh lemon juice (about 1.5 lemons)
  • 1–2 tbsp simple syrup or honey
  • 200 ml cold water or sparkling water
  • Ice
  • Lemon slice and mint to garnish — optional

Instructions

  1. 1Sift matcha into a bowl. Add the warm water and whisk smooth — should look like a thin paint.
  2. 2In a tall glass over ice, combine lemon juice and sweetener. Stir to dissolve.
  3. 3Add the cold water (or sparkling water for fizz). Stir.
  4. 4Pour the matcha gently on top. Stir before drinking, or leave for a layered look.
  5. 5Garnish with lemon slice and mint.

Tips

  • Sparkling water + matcha lemonade is the upgrade most cafés don't bother with.
  • Honey doesn't dissolve well in cold water — make a 1:1 honey-to-warm-water syrup first.
  • Skip ceremonial grade here. Culinary matcha is cheaper and tastes great with lemon.

FAQ

Won't lemon ruin the matcha?

No — lemon's acidity actually preserves the green color and mutes any bitterness. It's a classic pairing.

How much caffeine in matcha lemonade?

About 33 mg per 1 tsp matcha — a third of a cup of coffee. Enough for a midday lift, not enough to wreck your sleep.

Can I batch this for a pitcher?

Yes. Make matcha-water concentrate, lemon-syrup base, and water separately, then combine in a pitcher right before serving so the matcha doesn't settle for hours.
