Iced matcha — the cold-shake method

Forget making hot matcha and pouring it over ice — the cold method is faster, smoother, and tastes better. Sifted matcha plus cold water plus 20 seconds in a sealed shaker. That's it.

Five steps

  1. 1

    Sift 1 tsp matcha

Sift directly into a sealed jar or shaker bottle (Mason jar, cocktail shaker, water bottle — anything that closes tight).

  2. 2

    Add 200 ml cold water

Cold filtered water is fine. No heating needed. Some people use 50 ml warm water + 150 ml cold for a faster mix; both work.

  3. 3

Seal and shake hard, 20 seconds

Two-handed, vigorous, like a cocktail shaker. The cold water and the powder need that energy to fully integrate.

  4. 4

    Pour over ice

Fill a tall glass with ice, pour the matcha over. Plain iced matcha is now ready.

  5. 5

    Optional: add milk

For an iced matcha latte, pour 200 ml of cold milk into a separate glass first, fill with ice, then pour the iced matcha on top for the layered look.

Tips

  • Cold water makes matcha taste sweeter — bitterness compounds barely extract below room temp. Beginners often prefer iced for this reason.
  • Make a 2x or 3x batch in a jar and refrigerate up to 24 hours. Shake again before pouring; the powder settles.
  • Filtered water beats tap. Hard water flattens the flavor.
  • Lemon zest or a splash of yuzu transforms iced matcha — try it once.

FAQ

Can I make matcha with cold water?

Yes — and it tastes sweeter than hot. Shake matcha and cold water in a sealed jar or shaker for 20 seconds. The cold suppresses bitterness, so iced matcha is often the easier, more forgiving prep for beginners.

Why does iced matcha clump?

Cold water doesn't dissolve matcha as easily as warm. Two fixes: sift the matcha first, and shake harder than you think you need to. Twenty seconds in a sealed shaker beats sixty seconds of stirring.

Is the cold method worse than hot-then-ice?

Not at all — many people prefer it. The hot-then-ice method dilutes faster and exposes matcha to heat, dulling color. Cold preserves the bright green and the sweet, vegetal notes.

How much caffeine in iced matcha?

Same as hot — caffeine content depends on how much matcha you used, not water temperature. 1 tsp = ~33 mg, 2 tsp = ~66 mg.

Can I make iced matcha latte the same way?

Yes. Make the iced matcha first (sealed-shake cold method), then pour over a glass of ice and cold milk. The matcha sits on top in a clean emerald layer until you stir.
