Gyokuro

Premium shaded Japanese green tea — close cousin to matcha.

Also known as: jade dew

Gyokuro (literally "jade dew") is a high-end Japanese green tea grown under shade for two to three weeks before harvest, like matcha. Unlike matcha, the leaves aren't ground — they're rolled into thin needles and steeped in cool water (50–60 °C) for two to three minutes. The shading concentrates the same amino acids that give matcha its umami, so gyokuro is the closest steeped tea you can drink to a matcha bowl in flavor, caffeine, and L-theanine. Quality gyokuro starts around $50 per 100g and goes up sharply for top harvests.
