L-theanine

The amino acid responsible for matcha's calm-focus effect.

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea and a few mushrooms, present in matcha at roughly 18 mg per gram of powder. It promotes alpha-wave brain activity associated with relaxed alertness — basically, it raises the floor of focus while lowering the ceiling of jitter. When paired with matcha's caffeine, the result is a calmer, longer-lasting energy than coffee delivers at equivalent doses. The shading process used to grow matcha leaves boosts L-theanine concentration significantly above ordinary green tea.

In practice

  • An amino acid found in significant amounts almost nowhere except tea. Matcha carries roughly 20–45 mg per 2 g bowl.
  • Shading drives it up. Deprived of light the plant stops converting theanine into catechins, which is why shaded teas are sweeter and less bitter.
  • It is the main contributor to umami in a good bowl of matcha — the savoury, broth-like quality that distinguishes it from other green teas.
  • Widely credited with matcha's 'calm alertness' next to coffee. The evidence for L-theanine modulating caffeine's effects is real but modest, and the size of the effect at tea-level doses is not settled.

The common mistake

Expecting a sedative. L-theanine is not a tranquilliser and will not cancel out caffeine — a 66 mg bowl of matcha is still a stimulant dose. If matcha feels gentler than coffee, the smaller caffeine dose is doing most of that work.

Questions people ask

Does matcha have more L-theanine than other teas?

More than sencha or most steeped greens, because it is shade-grown and you consume the whole leaf rather than an infusion. Gyokuro is comparably high per gram of leaf, but you strain most of the leaf away, so a bowl of matcha still delivers more.
