Matcha and colostrum: why the stack took off, and what the evidence says

The pairing is a texture decision that got marketed as a health one. What colostrum is, why it works better in matcha than in coffee, and what the research does and does not support.

Colostrum in matcha arrived through social media rather than through nutrition science, and it is worth separating the two things going on. There is a practical reason the pairing works — colostrum genuinely behaves well in matcha, better than it does in coffee — and there is a set of health claims attached to it that run well ahead of the evidence. Both deserve a straight answer.

What colostrum is

Colostrum is the first milk a mammal produces after giving birth, before regular milk comes in. Supplements sold to humans are almost always bovine colostrum, collected in the first day or two after a cow calves, then pasteurised and spray-dried into powder. It is high in immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and growth factors, which is what the marketing is pointing at.

It is a dairy product. That matters for two reasons people often miss: it contains lactose, and it is unsuitable for anyone avoiding dairy for ethical as well as dietary reasons.

Why it mixes better in matcha than in coffee

This is the part that is straightforwardly true, and it explains why the combination spread through matcha rather than through coffee.

Colostrum is protein-rich, and proteins denature and clump in acid. Coffee is acidic, around pH 5, so colostrum stirred into black coffee frequently curdles or goes grainy. Whisked matcha is mildly alkaline, around pH 8.5 to 9, so the same powder disperses smoothly. Anyone who tried it in both drinks would have concluded matcha was the better vehicle within a week, and that is roughly what happened.

Heat is the other variable. Colostrum's proteins denature above about 60°C, which does not make it unsafe but does cost texture and, in principle, some of the activity of the heat-sensitive fractions. Matcha is prepared at 70 to 80°C, so the practical advice is to whisk the matcha first, let it drop, then add the colostrum — or use it in iced matcha, where the question does not arise.

What the evidence supports

Bovine colostrum has a genuine, if narrow, research base. The strongest findings are in gut barrier function and exercise-induced intestinal permeability, where several small trials have shown measurable effects. There is also reasonable evidence for reducing the incidence of upper respiratory infections in athletes under heavy training loads.

That is a meaningfully different claim from the ones usually made for it. Most trials are small, many are industry-funded, dosing varies widely between studies, and the immunoglobulins that supply much of the rationale are proteins — subject to digestion like any other protein, which is a real open question about how much survives to act systemically.

Where the claims outrun the research

  • Skin, hair and anti-ageing effects: essentially unsupported in humans. These claims derive from growth factors present in colostrum, without evidence that oral intake delivers them intact.
  • General immune enhancement in healthy adults: not established. The respiratory findings are specific to athletes under unusual physiological stress.
  • Muscle growth: colostrum contains IGF-1, which is why this claim exists. Human trials have not shown a meaningful anabolic effect at supplement doses.
  • Leaky gut as a general condition: the permeability research is specific and measured. The popular framing extends well beyond what was studied.

Does matcha interact with it?

There is one plausible interaction and it is worth knowing. Matcha's catechins, particularly EGCG, bind to proteins — this is the same mechanism that makes milk soften matcha's astringency. Colostrum is a protein powder. So the two will bind to some degree in the cup, which likely reduces both matcha's perceived bitterness and, in principle, the free availability of some of each.

This is not a warning; it is what happens whenever you put protein and tea polyphenols together, including in any matcha latte. But it does mean the combination is not simply additive, and anyone taking colostrum for a specific measured purpose might reasonably take it apart from tea.

How to make it well

  • Whisk 2 g of matcha with 60 ml of water at 75°C until smooth. Always hydrate the matcha before anything else goes in.
  • Let it cool for a minute, or add cold milk, so the mixture sits below about 60°C before the colostrum goes in.
  • Add 5–10 g of colostrum and blend with a frother or shake in a bottle. It will not disperse fully with a spoon.
  • For iced, shake everything together over ice — the easiest version and the one least likely to clump.

Who should not

Anyone with a dairy allergy — colostrum is dairy and contains milk proteins. Anyone avoiding lactose should check the specific product, as lactose content varies. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, immunocompromised or taking immunosuppressants should raise it with a clinician first, since colostrum is an immunologically active product and that combination has not been well studied.
