Susudake

White bamboo — the most common material for chasen.

Also known as: white bamboo

Susudake is the most common type of bamboo used for chasen production. Lighter in color than kurodake (black bamboo) or shichiku (purple bamboo), it's softer to work with and slightly less durable. A susudake chasen lasts six to twelve months of daily use, versus closer to eighteen months for kurodake. It's the right default choice for home users — easier to find, cheaper, and forgiving for beginners learning to whisk.
