Matcha plants are shaded for two to four weeks before harvest. Less light pushes the plant to produce more chlorophyll, more caffeine, and more L-theanine. A shaded leaf is just denser in the active compounds you're after.
2. You drink the leaf
No extraction, no waste
Steeped green tea pulls out only the water-soluble fraction; the leaf goes in the bin. With matcha, the powdered leaf stays suspended in your bowl, so you ingest everything — caffeine, L-theanine, catechins, and fiber.
